Jelly, Jelly In My Belly!

Coconut JellyI think I have an addiction to flavoured coconut jelly. I visited my local Asian food market last week and saw these colourful containers of flavoured coconut jelly on sale for $3.88. I haven’t tasted it before, but I do recall similar products (with “Konjac” listed in the ingredients) being in the news five years ago because those products were deemed as a choking hazard because of their size and consistency. The ones I saw at the grocery store had a bright warning label on the back of the package (informing people to chew thoroughly before swallowing and to slice the jelly if feeding it to children over 5 or the elderly),

I was enticed by the colours and flavours, and I always love to try new things, so I pick up a couple ‘konjac-free’ coconut jelly packs. I’m glad that I did, because they are delicious! It’s like eating Jell-O with a surprise gummy bear inside! :D Not only that, but they are fat-free, cholesterol-free and pretty decent on the calorie counter.

I love the mango and lychee flavours, but if I had to choose, mango would be on the top of my list. I think I ate too many today though… :( Ah well… at least the containers are reusable. Now I have something to put my flour and rice in!

Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme!

Roots Jamaican Bobsled Federation HoodieSo I stopped by Orfus road yesterday for a bit, and I’m proud of myself because I only ended up buying one thing. I went into the Roots Outlet store to see what they had on sale. I found a nice Jamaican Bobsled Federation hoodie! :D I gotta rep my background afterall. The quality is great, and the colours are nice and bright. Best of all, I got it at a wicked price: $29.99 (regular price $128.00), and it was the last one left! I’m definitely gonna rock this on a cold winter day, while dreaming of the warmth of the island.

This has got be thinking of the ’93 Disney movie Cool Runnings. Here’s a clip from one of my favourite scenes from the movie:

On a side note, I also stopped by The Bay in Yorkdale, and got a nice, reversible leather belt (Fossil) for $22. Regular price? $55! The Bay has a promotion going on now that lets you save40% off the lowest clearanced-marked price.

I love a good deal.

Shrimp SkewersI had a great BBQ last weekend. Here is a recipe for one of the tasty items I cooked on the grill.

Prep Time: 10 minutes + 1 hour of refrigeration
Yield: 6-8 servings

Ingredients:

2 pounds (2 frozen, 450g packages) of large, raw shrimp (peeled and deveined)
1/4 cup melted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1/4 cup of fresh, chopped basil
4 cloves minced garlic
1 small can of pineapple tidbits (drained)

wooden skewers

Directions:

  1. If you’re using frozen shrimp, place them in a colander and run cold water over them for about 5 minutes, until defrosted. Peel and discard the shells.
  2. With a spoon, mix the melted butter, olive oil, lemon juice and garlic in a large bowl. Gradually stir in the basil.
  3. Add the shrimp to the marinade, coating well. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for about 1 hour.
  4. Preheat your greased grill or barbecue to medium heat.
  5. Thread about 3-5 shrimp on each skewer, alternating with pineapple tidbits.
  6. Grill for approximately 5 minutes, turning once, until the shrimp turn pink.
  7. Remove shrimp from the grill and place on a platter. You can garnish with lemon slices to squirt on the shrimp. Enjoy!

Je Parle Un Peu Français! Michel Thomas Speak French For Beginners

Michel Thomas Speak French For Beginners ProgramI’ve been a tad skeptical about those language learning software and audio kits. So I surprised myself by purchasing Michel Thomas’ Speak French For Beginners program. I haven’t heard this much French since I took the Summer Language Bursary Program (now known as Explore) when I was in university. The 5-week language program (in Trois Pistoles, Quebec) I took was one of the best experiences I ever had. I made new friends, experienced different cultures and activities, and most importantly, I greatly improved on my French (I fairly recollected my one year of high school french). Of course as soon as I left Trois Pistoles and returned to Toronto, I forgot a good deal of what I learned because I was re-immersed into an 99% anglophone city.

I would love to learn French on a more conversational level. Speaking a second-lanuage definitely has it’s benefits. And when I do learn French to an extent, I won’t have to worry about strangers asking me, “Oh, you’re name is Monique. Do you speak French?” :D

I’ve heard positive things about Michel Thomas‘ teaching methods, so when I noticed that it was on sale at Chapters.Indigo.ca for 34% off the regular $99.99 price tag, I jumped on it (I also got an additinal 5% off with my iRewards card, and had a $5 coupon, so I wound up paying only $60 with free shipping). It probably would’ve been cheaper if I purchased it from amazon.com, but I wasn’t sure about all those extra customs charges at the border.

Yesterday I started with disc one, and this morning I listened to the second one on my way to work. Honestly, the reviews aren’t kidding: his way of teaching actually makes me retain what I’m learning. I don’t have to worry about writing anything down, reviewing homework, or memorization. And the program is done as Michel teaches two students, so you actually feel like you’re learning as part of the class.  Using your pause button on your mp3/CD player, you’ll try to translate the English phrase Michel asks into French phrases before the students.  Part of the process is also learning from the mistakes the students may make before Michel corrects them.

Almost 20% into the entire package, I have a basic understanding of words, phrases and vocab that could get me to feel a little more comfortable with speaking simple French–a lot more than I remember from when I was taking French in high school.   The programs breaks down the language, so you’re able to piece together each ‘building block’ into a proper sentence.  I’m actually beginning to understand more of the French language and how it works.

No books. No writing. No drills. And nothing to memorize– ever! With his patented method, Michel Thomas has taught languages to top celebrities and–through his bestselling audio programs–more than a million everyday learners around the world. At the end of this ten-CD beginner’s program, you will have acquired:

* A full working vocabulary
* Essential comprehension skills
* Complete language confidence

Don’t try to memorize specific words or expressions. It is a basic principle of the Michel Thomasâ„¢ method that the responsibility for the student’s learning lies with the teacher. With Michel Thomas as your teacher, your learning will be based on understanding–and what you understand, you do not forget!

Included in the package:

* 10 audio CDs–including the two-CD Speak French Get Started Kit and 2 review CDs
* Program booklet
* Zippered travel case

I can’t wait until I reach the end of the 10-disc course to see how much I really have learned! Now writing en Français is another story. It’s a good thing I also picked up Barron’s French Verb book! I’ll be sure to keep you guys informed on my progress.
